Lee Sharkey's Walking Backwards recently appeared from Tupelo Press. Her other titles include Calendars of Fire (Tupelo, 2013) and A Darker, Sweeter String (Off the Grid, 2008). Her work has appeared in Massachusetts Review, Crazyhorse, FIELD, Kenyon Review, Nimrod, Pleiades, Seattle Review,and other journals. "Faceless" is one in a series of poems inspired by the paintings of Samuel Bak. Already a practicing artist when he was imprisoned at age 8 in the Vilna ghetto, Bak survived WWII and, at 83, continues to paint prolifically. His work defines categorization, combining elements of surrealism and classical naturalism with a personal vocabulary of metonymic objects.
