Spring 2018 Editor’s Note

With this Spring Issue, we welcome a crop of writers new to us, and also kick off our Redux series, in which we intend to republish in each issue a few pieces from our past.

The past and present blend in this publication, as it does, on another level, with some of our staff transitions.

Deep gratitude to our past Managing Editor Amy Grier as she moves to be a reader with us.  Among her many significant contributions, Amy has been a terrific Blog Editor on social justice and has evolved our newsletter into a work of art!  Anita Ballesteros will be our new Managing Editor beginning in early June.  And congratulations to Andrai Whitted, who has moved up to Digital Editor.

Also, some transitions in poetry!  We express deep gratitude to Ben Berman, who for many years was our Poetry Co-editor and now is a Contributing Poetry Editor, while we welcome as new Poetry Editor Iain Haley Pollack, whose new collection of poetry will appear next year.  Also, we thank Dzvinia Orlowsky, who will become a Contributing Editor of Poetry-in-Translation, and we welcome Barbara Siegel Carlson, who will continue Dzvinia’s vision as we expand our international outreach.  We further thank Anne Riesenberg for her long service as a poetry reader and an assistant, and we welcome Robbie Gamble, a new poetry reader.

We at Solstice are truly grateful to these fine writers who are joining us or staying on staff because they will continue to promote our supportive, diverse community.

As you might know, Solstice recently learned that one of our essays, “Hannah Arendt in New York” by Baron Wormser, has been chosen to be included in The Best American Essays 2018.  We are thrilled with this new distinction, and we also look forward to our first annual print issue in the fall of 2019 as we begin to celebrate our tenth anniversary!

Please see the individual editors’ notes for highlights in this special spring issue.  Also, gratitude to Alison Shaw for her striking cover photo and eight other images. And try to visit the Alison Shaw Gallery at Martha’s Vineyard.

For those of you who submitted to our contest, winners and finalists will be announced in our Summer Contest Issue, due out in early August.

Again, many thanks to you, our readers, for your support!  Please subscribe, if you have not, share our magazine with friends, and above all, keep reading!

Warmly, Lee Hope
