In honor of Kurt Brown, distinguished poet and former poetry editor of Solstice a Magazine of Diverse Voices, our magazine announces The Kurt Brown Memorial Fellowship of $1,000. Kurt was the author of many books of poetry and nonfiction, and he also edited anthologies to promote the work of other writers. Our associate poetry editor, Ben Berman, spoke of Kurt’s generosity and dedication to fostering poetic excellence.
In Kurt’s honor, our magazine offers this fellowship to help a writer in any genre who has published in, or submitted to, or has subscribed to, or is a volunteer on the staff of the Solstice lit mag, to enroll in Solstice MFA low-residency Program, with which we have a sisterly connection. Solstice magazine is, however, an independent, free-standing nonprofit.
Because this is a recruitment scholarship, preference will be given to a writer who has not yet applied to, or who has not yet been accepted into the Solstice MFA, or who has been accepted but is deciding among acceptances from other programs.
To apply, please submit a manuscript of no more than 20 pages or 6 poems, your name and contact information, a short bio and a statement of why you would like the award to www.solsticelitmag.org/fellowship. Applicants will be considered on a rolling basis. Manuscripts will be judged by the editors of Solstice. This award is funded by Solsticelitmag and Laure-Anne Bosselaar Brown.
The writer selected by our magazine must then be accepted by the Solstice MFA low-residency program at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA. http://www.pmc.edu/mfa-apply. You must have an undergraduate degree to apply. The Fellowship will be awarded to a student starting the Solstice MFA Program during its 2014 summer residency/fall semester or toward its 2015 winter residency/spring semester and is intended for writers not yet accepted to the MFA program.
