We will publish fiction, poetry, nonfiction and photography.
We’re going to experiment with the form of the literary journal…experiment in a certain direction…
We will publish fine work, of course, from previously published established writers to up-and-coming writers. We will be eclectic, diverse, formal or informal, traditional and/or experimental.
Also, we will publish underserved writers. We seek writers on the margins—from writing groups for those on probation or parole, or from writing groups in prisons, in shelters, in rehab programs, in veterans centers, in churches or in libraries.
We already have some such writing programs in mind, but perhaps, you, our readers, can suggest other such groups where people have been working on their writing. Please send your ideas to Lee Hope, executive editor, at solsticelitmag.org.
Solstice: A Magazine of Diverse Voices will not only publish writers of diverse nationalities, races and religions, but also writers from diverse cultures within our culture.
Our standards are high. All work will be vetted, that is, read by preliminary readers, and then referred to our editors, and then to our board, so that readers can look for some fine juried pieces.
The Solstice Institute, sponsor of Solstice: A Magazine of Diverse Voices, is an independent, freestanding 501©(3) nonprofit. We have a sister relationship with the Solstice MFA program at Pine Manor College, but the institute is separate from any institution. We do have some funds to sponsor literary contests in order to showcase unique voices. In addition, we offer a few scholarships to writers’ conferences. We are also doing outreach to community writing groups on the fringes in order to publish new, unheard voices. For these projects and others, we will appreciate your donations.
In short, we want to present colliding, diverse, sometimes controversial, points of view. We want to stir dialogue among readers on our blog, so we will post specific relevant topics. And on our blog, we’ll have print, audio and video interviews with a variety of folks because we believe probing into diversity can promote unity.
We’re going to shake things up a bit. Cause some ferment. After all, Solstice is renewal.
