Catherine Mauk is a US expat who has lived in Australia for nearly 37 years. She is a writer of literary nonfiction; primarily memoir, the politics of place, and philosophical issues that fascinate her. Her essays have been published both in the US and Australia and have been selected as runner up/finalist and winner in multiple literary nonfiction contests. Her essay “A Rarely Sung Song” is from a collection of essays she is developing under the working title “Ruminations of a Haggoddess.” Another essay from the collection was listed as a notable essay in Best American Essays 2019. She is also a former Breadload in Sicily scholar. Now in the fourth quarter of her life, she is guided by Kafka’s saying that “writing should be an axe for the frozen sea within us.”
